spoke too soon

Recently I made a comment on house & baby's blog about how Chickie had picked up every cold and bug that was going around when he was at childcare - but had been healthy so far at school. Well, obviously I didn't knock on wood hard enough, or didn't cross my fingers tightly enough... because he now has a cold. He seems fine - apparently two mouthfuls of cough medicine will fix him right up (so he says) - you have to love the resilience of little kids. J, however, seems to have caught it too and didn't look very good at all last night.

This morning I felt fine when I got out of bed, but not long after I arrived at work, I started feeling achy and my throat started to feel all scratchy. Then a bit later I started having this strong craving for raw carrot. That's always been my signal for the start of a cold or whatever. I could never figure out why I'd feel like eating carrots when my throat is sore and I'm feeling under the weather. Am I weird or do others get strange cravings when they're sick (please tell me I'm not weird!) . Anyway I've come home from work early to try to rest (in the hopes of getting rid of it sooner) and as soon as I've finished my lemon and ginger tea, I'm off to bed.

In other news, Chickie has now lost both the teeth that were being pushed aside for the big front tooth. The big front tooth is taking up the space that used to contain two, so I'm thinking dental fund is a good idea (and a big holiday, if he doesn't need, it is a great idea hehe).

My twitch is mostly gone. Stretching, heat etc didn't really seem to do anything to it, so I don't know what's caused it - or caused it to go away again.

In other big news - J and I might be visiting New Zealand later this year. I'm so excited! I might get to go skiing, which I've never tried before.

Right, tea's finished, so I'm off to lie down.

I lectured the boy on 'try not to cough' when I took him to the first day of 'real' kinder ... I know, it's bad, but we'd been leading up to that day SO much .. and I figured he got the bug there in the first place, so no harm done ..

When we got there, there was a note on the door saying they'd found 2x cases of nits and would be doing daily headchecks.

Fien for the boy with the never-washed hair .. but i'd just done mine that morning - YIKES ! NITS !

I managed to catch a cold on the second week of my holiday. My whole time in Europe was spent waking up in the middle of the night coughing and having a really runny nose. It got to the point where I was having to wash my hankies in the hotel room hand-basins.

You'll love NZ, we did.

Summertime colds are the worst! Long sunny days and you can't even enjoy them.... then again, that's a good excuse to snuggle in bed with a book in the air conditioning. Hope the entire family is back up to snuff soon.

New Zealand - sounds magnificent! You have to appreciate countries with huge mountains!

A belated happy birthday, by the way; I've been somewhat distracted over the past month...

Oh, and - tag! You're it! :-)

As a biased Kiwi, of course you will love NZ! Everyone does. The scenery & the snow, if that is what you want, are both wonderful.

Hope the snuffles clear up soon.

I think kiddie-medicine must be much yummier than it was when I was little because my kids adore it! Hope you all recover soon.

Hope Chickie gets better quick. The FDA has warned parents here not to give decongestants and cough remedies to kid sunder 6 here, in fact they pulled most of the remedies off the shelves.

h&b, I'd get into the habit of checking his hair regularly to be on the safe side. They're a pain in the proverbial.

steve, getting sick while on holidays is such a shame. I hope you had a good time anyway.

The weather's been weird here melinda. Today it's meant to be really hot again, but during the week we had a couple of days where we put Chickie to bed in winter pj's.

Thanks for the birthday wishes kindablue. I've had a look at the meme and I'm thinking about what to put. I'll probably have it up soon.

meggie, are you familiar with Queenstown? That's where we're going. We'll have the chance to ski apparently, which will be a whole new experience for me (to be honest more snow than a small drift on the ground will be a new experience for me!).

stomper, I can't stand the taste of cough medicine. The only one that doesn't make me gag is the traditional benedryl. The rest are disgusting. Chickie's never had a problem taking medicines. A good thing since he's had so many antibiotics for his ear infections when he was younger.

I'd heard that phos. They haven't done it here, so far as I know. At one stage the doctors gave me an option of getting Chickie the grommets (ear tubes) for his ear infections or to keep him on decongestants for a period of 3 months to see if it would clear up. We went with the grommets and I think that was the right choice. I don't mind giving him a dose of something overnight to help dry up the runny nose so he can sleep, but I wouldn't feel comfortable giving them to him regularly for 3 months.

Carrot cravings?! Yes, you're definitely weird.

New Zealand is a great place. We went there last year and the little one thought it was fantastic. Sounds like it might be a bit of a romantic getaway for you two though!!
