J is crazy

Why would you sleep outside in the freezing cold - well 7 (44) degrees, which is cold enough (it is winter here after all!)- in a swag on the cold hard ground when you have a perfectly comfortable bed in a nicely warmed house available? I don't get it.

J's been talking about taking Chickie camping some day when he's older. Chickie's now five so J was thinking of testing the waters a bit. He borrowed his dad's tent and set it up out the back yard with his swag next to it. He and Chickie were talking about it for days. So come Chickie's bedtime, off they went and spent, oh perhaps 15 minutes out there. Chickie got cold (not surprisingly) and was a bit scared so they came inside and Chickie went to bed in comfort and warmth (ie: his own bed).

A few hours later, J said he was off to bed and headed outside! Yes, he slept there all night. Yes, he was cold and yes, it wasn't too comfortable. His back was bothering him a bit today. I'm still shaking my head over it.

Guess I'm just not the camping type...

That is nuts. It drops below 60F and I am looking for my coat. It didn't take long for my Northern blood to thin.

I had to laugh! He seems to be a man of his convictions-- or just stubborn?
I loathe camping, but my daughter & Sil love it.

I am so TOTALLY over camping. I will never sleep in a tent again as long as I live. Good on ya, J. Do it for the rest of us.

I think it's a whole "man vs. wild" thing. There once was this show called 1800 house. People went back to live like they did in the 1800's. The men loved that crap. The women, not so much. The men were actually sort of tortured when they went back to current life. It must be something in the man DNA. They get all cro-magnon.

Well, the tent has been packed away and the swag is rolled up. I hope he's decided to wait until it's warmer.

Men can be awful. That sounds really cold! It is summer here and very warm and humid!

That sounds mad to me.....but then I only camp in the summer with the comfort of a full size (4+ inch deep) air bed....

Ahh... what pussies!!!
I know what it's like to be camping in AUSTRALIA in winter. Hell, I did it up the Blue Mountains near Lithgow in the June Long Weekend many times!!! It even snowed once!!!
Seriously, I can no longer do it thanks to spinal surgery, and I miss it very much... I hope that they gone in summer, and depending on where you are in Australia (clearly not in Sydney or the Hunter Valley as it rained all weekend just about), it might even be better in spring...
Here from Michele's this morning...

myutopia - I suggested he wait until it was warmer - that was ignored.

h - I did suggest that if he's that interested we get a proper tent big enough for a decent air mattress and then they can both sleep in it in a bit more comfort. I still can't imagine why people would actually want to sleep on the ground ;)

velcro - I'm about to watch it now. We had a long weekend here and there was a Doctor Who marathon on telly, so I re-watched a lot of the first two series. I've heard the new ep is a bit scary, so possibly a good thing I'm watching during the day!

gnat - I'm sure that's J's idea too, though if he plans on taking Chickie, I might have a few rules to add myself ;)

Bernie - camping in the snow? You're nuts too ;) No, not in those areas, though I saw it on the news. Very sad about the people that died.

The only rain we had over the weekend was pretty light. Just enough to get me sopping wet as I pulled the tarp off the top of the clothes line (sunny day here for a change so it's laundry time)...

Oh great One said...

That's too cold for camping for me!

Did their billy boil? Did they stick a jumbuck in their swagger sack? Did waltzing ensue??

caramaena said...

lol phos! I'm fairly certain there was no waltzing. Not sure about the rest ;)

Good on them for giving it a go! But I'd have been like you, watching and waiting inside the nice warm house.
